5 Things You Probably Didn't Know about Mitas Tyres

Mitas may seem like the new kids on the motorcycle tyre block but this rubber powerhouse is close to celebrating 100 years! Read below to find out some interest facts on Mitas tyres and its origins.

1. Mitas was originally a Michelin subsidiary project

It was established in 1933 as a tyre making plant in Prague with Michelin holding a shareholding majority of 75%. The rest was held by a number of Czechoslovakian banks. The plant made car, motorcycle tyres and bicycle tyres and tubes.

2. Mitas had a different name before becoming the Mitas we know and love

In 1946 it was called Pneumichelin, n.p. Praha.

3. The Mitas brand name was found with a naming contest

In 1947 a contest was launched to find a new name for the plant with its new name, Mitas winning! The name Mitas came from merging the names of two large rubber-producing companies in Prague – Michelin and Veritas. Veritas, which made pram wheels at the time, joined the Michelin group in 1946 so it was a perfect marriage!

4. Mitas has been involved with tractors since 2002.

In 2002 Mitas launched its production of radial tyres for tractors and since 2014 it has sponsored the European Tractor Pulling Committee. Big or small, Mitas is a brand that is wholeheartedly behind the round and black. Alexa! Play ‘I’ve Got a Brand New Combine Harvester…

5. Mitas are working towards a more sustainable tyre industry.

Mitas have got their heads pointed in the right direction! Focusing on the production chain of natural rubber and inulin from Russian dandelions, they’re involved with DRIVE4EU, an initiative at making a more sustainable tyre. The aim of this demonstrative project is to help the EU become less dependent on the import of natural rubber and all the environmental implications that come with it.
